Spring Clean Ups

Mulching
Mulching can do wonders for your flower beds and landscape. A layer of mulch over an existing layer not only gives your garden a finished look; it also holds many health benefits for your plants.
Mulches help keep the soil well aerated by reducing soil compaction that results when raindrops hit the soil. They also reduce water runoff and soil erosion. Mulches help maintain a more uniform soil temperature (warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer) and promote growth.
De-Thatching
A light layer of thatch, one-fourth to one-half inches deep, is actually beneficial to your lawn. It protects the soil from changing temperatures and adds to the resilience of the lawn, which means when you step on it, it springs back instead of compacting the soil. However, even too much of a good thing can be damaging.
When your thatch becomes too thick it acts as a thatch roof would. It repels water and any other nutrient you try to give your lawn. Thick thatch can prevent water from ever reaching the soil, which results in the grass roots growing in the thatch, instead of the soil. Since the water in the thatch evaporates much quicker than that in the soil, your lawn will become susceptible to drying out quicker than if the roots were planted firmly in the soil.
At 4 Daughters, we have the right equipment to keep the thatch in your lawn at an appropriate level.
Hydro Seeding
HydroSeeding is a planting process in which a "slurry" containing seed, hydro seeding mulch, fertilizer and a tackifier (bonding agent) is sprayed onto the ground. Hydro seeding offers many advantages to the traditional process of broadcasting or sowing dry seed. It promotes quick germination and inhibits soil erosion. It is also a very cost effective alternative to sod and offers a significant cost savings as well as many other benefits.
Virtually any grass or erosion control seed that can be planted by seed can be hydro seeded. This includes any sun or shade lawn seed, athletic field mixes, pasture mixes, native grasses, wildflowers, roadside mixes and erosion control mixes. The nutrient rich slurry helps promote fast germination. The hydro seeding mulch helps keep the soil moist to enable the seed to germinate quickly and unlike straw or hay contains no weed seed. The tackifer in the mix acts like a glue to hold the mulch in place and to help prevent washout in the case of heavy rains.
